25 Free Crochet Crown Patterns for Kids' Dress-Up (Kings, Princesses and Babies)

Looking for a free crochet crown pattern? Here are 25 of them: dress-up crowns for little kings and queens, princess crowns and cozy crown ear warmers, tiny crowns for baby photos and first birthdays, flower crowns, a crown hat, and quick crown appliques. Every one has the full written pattern free on the designer's own site, with no sign-up. A crochet crown is soft, it won't snap like a plastic one, and most take just an evening.

For each pattern I've noted the yarn, the hook, the sizes and how it's built, so you can match one to the child (or the grown-up) wearing it. Many of these designers also sell an ad-free PDF. That's optional: the version linked here is free to read on the page.

How crochet crowns are made. Most crowns start with a chain that fits around the head, joined into a ring. You work a few rounds to make the band, then a last round of tall stitches (trebles or shells with a picot on top) to make the points. To make the points stand up, you can use spray starch, a fabric stiffener, or a strand of metallic thread held with the yarn. A few designers crochet pipe cleaners into the points instead. Measure the head first: most patterns tell you to chain in a multiple of 6 or 8, so it's easy to make the band bigger or smaller.

Kids' dress-up and king crowns

These are the everyday play crowns for the dress-up box. Most fit a preschooler, and several come in many sizes.

Wild Child Crown โ€” Yarndrasil. Inspired by Where the Wild Things Are, with a faux-fur trim. Worsted cotton held together with Lion Brand Go Faux Fur on a 6mm (J) hook. It starts with 48 foundation treble crochet, then sc rows and 6 points. Sized for ages 2 to 5 (18 inches around). Pipe cleaners in the points keep them upright with no starch. Intermediate.

Crocheted Crown โ€” mrsbrownmakes. A soft child's crown in DK organic cotton with a gold thread, on a 3mm hook. Loosely chain 100 and join, decrease to 88 stitches, then work 11 points with a picot edge. Written in UK terms. A commenter says these soft points are "kinder to bare feet" than a plastic crown.

Crochet Crown and Circlet โ€” Tales of Butterflies. Two patterns on one page: a pointed crown (5 rows) and a simpler circlet (4 rows). Worsted yarn on a 3.75mm hook. It starts with a foundation sc row of 50 for a baby, 60 for a child or 70 to 80 for an adult. Starch it if you like.

Crochet Crown โ€” Traverse Bay Crochet. The widest size range here: 8 sizes from newborn (13 inches) to large adult (20 inches), with a starting chain from 40 to 70. A bead stitch band with a shell and picot border, in worsted yarn on a 5.5mm (I) hook. It also includes a crown headband version with a ribbed band.

Kid's Crown โ€” Alli Crafts. Made for a 2-year-old's birthday. Chain 60 and join, then 6 rounds of crossed dc and puff stitches, then 6 points. About 18 inches around, on a 5mm (H) hook. Use a stiff medium-weight acrylic like Red Heart so it holds its shape. The page links newborn and 12-month versions.

Child's Royal Crown โ€” Knitter Nutter. A pretty, lacy crown in sport-weight cotton with metallic thread, on a 3.5mm hook. Chain 96, then about 9 rounds of dc, chain arches and treble points (18 inches around). Dry it over a paper towel roll with fabric stiffener or starch. Optional beads are crocheted right in, so they're secure.

Princess crowns and crown ear warmers

Valerie's Princess Crown โ€” The Lavender Chair. A crown with one tall, lacy peak at the front, just like a princess tiara. Worsted cotton on a 4.25mm (G) hook. Chain 70 and join, then 3 rounds of tall stitches and picots. Sized for a toddler. Intermediate.

Queen Bee Crown โ€” One Dog Woof. Yes, a crown for grown-ups, too. Bernat Handicrafter Cotton on a 5mm (H) hook, with 10 treble spikes topped with picots. Round 1 is a chain of 80 for an adult (about 21 inches), and it scales down in multiples of 8 for kids. Rated easy, and great for birthday girls of any age.

Crochet Crown โ€” Crochet 365 Knit Too. Just 25 to 30 yards of Lion Brand Wool-Ease in gold, on a 4mm (G) hook. Four rounds: hdc, X-stitch dc, hdc, then shell points with picots. A size chart gives the starting chain. The designer didn't even block hers.

Crochet Crown Ear Warmer โ€” The Purple Poncho. A crown that keeps ears warm on cold days. A ribbed band (front and back post hdc) with X-stitches and 13 to 15 points, in worsted yarn plus gold cotton on a 5mm (H) hook. Sizes S, M and L (19, 20 and 21 inches). Spray starch helps the points stand. Intermediate.

Crochet Crown Earwarmer โ€” Crochet For You. A ribbed sc band (chain 7, worked in rows), then shell spikes worked along one long edge. Worsted yarn on a 5.5mm (I) hook. A child size (17 1/2 inches around and 4 1/2 inches tall), with a video. There's also a newborn to toddler version.

Baby crowns and photo props

Little crowns are perfect for newborn photos, a first birthday, or a baby shower gift. Always stay close by when a baby wears one, and take it off for naps.

King's Crown Infant Photo Prop โ€” Cre8tion Crochet. A sparkly gold crown in Aunt Lydia's #5 metallic thread on a 3.75mm (F) hook. Round 1 is 42 foundation hdc, then 6 rounds of shells and picot shells. About 8 inches across; it sits on top of the head. Rated easy, and marked as a photo prop only.

Free Crochet Crown Pattern โ€” Posh Patterns. Five baby sizes, from newborn (12 1/2 inches, chain 42) up to toddler (19 inches, chain 66). Sc rounds, then a 5-dc shell round and a slip stitch edge. Vanna's Choice yarn on a G hook. A lovely first birthday crown.

Crochet Crown for Children โ€” Blue Star Crochet. A soft, chunky crown in roving yarn on a 6mm hook. Chain 54 (adjust in multiples of 6), then 7 rounds of crossed sc and a round of big treble points. Sized for about a 4-month-old (39cm), with a short video. US terms.

Lil' Prince Crown โ€” Maize Hutton. The shortest pattern here: just 4 rounds (sc, sc, 7-dc shells and a picot edge). Worsted wool on a 4mm hook, with a chain of 60 for a 3-month-old. Change the color to make it a princess crown.

Flower crowns

Flower crowns are lovely for flower girls, spring birthdays, and fairy costumes.

Lacy Flower Crown โ€” Sweet Softies. A lacy band with tie ends, topped with roses in three sizes and little leaves. Light-weight yarn (Patons Grace) on a 5mm hook for the band and smaller hooks for the flowers. You can make it any size; a chain of 64 makes a 12-inch baby band. Full video.

Crochet Flower Crown โ€” Jenny & Teddy. Five or six rolled roses (each a chain of 49 and 2 rows, rolled up), two styles of leaves and chain ties. DK or worsted scraps on a 3.5 to 4mm hook. Made for beginners, with a video.

Daisy Flower Crown โ€” Hopeful Honey. A classic daisy chain that never wilts. A band of hdc rows (52 of them), then 13 daisies in two sizes sewn along it. 8-ply yarn on 5mm and 4mm hooks. It fits all sizes.

Crown hats, headbands, appliques and a doll crown

A ribbed band, then hdc rounds with tapestry crochet, in worsted yarn on a 5.5mm (I) hook. The points stand up on their own, with no starch. Intermediate. Hugs & Kisses Crown Headband โ€” The Crochet Crowd. A wide headband (19 x 5 inches) with X-stitches and popcorns, finished with a shell and picot crown edge. Worsted yarn on 5mm and 4.5mm hooks. The starting chain runs from 42 for a toddler to 66 for a large adult.

Crown Applique โ€” The Caffeinated Snail. A flat little crown to sew onto a hat, a pillow or a birthday shirt. Chain 14, work 3 rows of hdc, then make the points in Row 5. Worsted yarn on a 5mm hook, beginner-friendly, with step photos.

Crown Appliques, Fancy and Simple โ€” With Love, Feli. Two tiny crowns (each takes about 3 meters of yarn) in cotton held with gold or silver metallic thread. The designer stiffened them with spray starch and made them into brooches. A video for each one.

Little Doll Crown โ€” Amigurumi To Go. A tiny crown for a 4-inch doll or plush, so toys can play dress-up too. Chain 20, one row of sc, then a spike row, sewn into a ring. Red Heart Super Saver on a 4mm hook, with a video.

Tips for crowns that keep their shape

  • Pick a firm yarn. Cotton and stiff acrylic hold points better than soft, fuzzy yarn. Hold a strand of metallic thread with your yarn for extra sparkle and a bit of body.
  • Stiffen the points. Spray starch, a fabric stiffener or a sugar-water soak all work. Dry the crown over a jar, a balloon or a paper towel roll so it keeps its round shape.
  • Measure the head, then chain a little less. A crown should sit snugly. If the band is loose, it will slip over the eyes during play.
  • Skip loose beads and buttons for little ones. For toddlers and babies, use crocheted bobbles and puffs instead of sewn-on gems.
  • Make one for every guest. A simple four-round crown is quick, so a set of them makes a fun birthday party favor.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a crochet crown stand up?

Use a firm yarn, then stiffen the finished crown with spray starch, fabric stiffener (like Mod Podge Stiffy) or a sugar-water solution, and let it dry over a round form. The Yarndrasil and Crochet For You crown hat patterns hold their points without any starch.

How big should a crochet crown be for a child?

Measure around the head where the crown will sit. Most toddlers are 18 to 19 inches and most older kids are 19 to 20 inches. Make the band about an inch smaller than the head so it stays on. Several patterns above give a starting chain for each size.

What's the easiest crochet crown for a beginner?

The Maize Hutton Lil' Prince Crown is just 4 rounds of sc and shells. The One Dog Woof Queen Bee crown is also rated easy and scales to any size.

Is a crochet crown safe for a baby?

Crowns are fine for supervised photos and parties. Avoid sewn-on beads, buttons and loose ribbons, never let a baby sleep in one, and take it off once the photos are done.
