Looking for a free crochet earring pattern? Here are 24 of them, from easy hoops, circles and floss tassels to flower and leaf earrings, lacy mandalas, hearts, Christmas gnomes and gift boxes, and beaded and granny square designs. Every full written pattern is free on the designer's own site, with no sign-up. A pair of earrings takes a few yards of thread or embroidery floss and usually less than an hour, so they're one of the quickest handmade gifts you can make, and a lovely way to use up the tiny leftovers in your stash.
For each pattern I've noted the thread or yarn, the hook, the finished size where the designer gives one, and the findings you'll need (ear wires, jump rings, hoops or beads). Some designers also sell an ad-free PDF, but the version linked here is free to read on the page.
Before you start. Most earrings use either cotton embroidery floss (all six strands) with a 2 to 3.5mm hook, or size 10 crochet thread with a small steel hook (1.5 to 1.9mm). Floss is easier for beginners and comes in every color. Thread gives a finer, lacier result. You'll also want a pair of small flat-nose pliers to open jump rings, and hypoallergenic ear wires if anyone in your family has sensitive ears.
Easy crochet earrings for beginners
Simple circles, hoops, tassels and squares. If you've never made jewelry, start here.
High Desert Crochet Earrings β Fiber Flux. A floss circle (24 hdc worked into a ring) on an E/3.5mm hook, topped by a wooden bead and finished with a wrapped floss tassel. They're about 3 inches tall, use earring posts, and the designer calls them super easy. There's a full video, too.
Lacy Hoop Earrings β The Purple Poncho. A ring of 16 dc with chain spaces is set inside a metal hoop, then 32 sc are worked around the wire to hold it in place. It takes only 5 yards of #10 crochet cotton on a 1.5mm steel hook, and finishes about 1 1/2 inches across.
Colorful Granny Square Earrings β Whistle and Ivy. A three-round mini granny square in two colors of embroidery floss on a B/2mm hook: 8 dc in a ring, then corners, then a single crochet border. If you can make a granny square, you can make these in 20 minutes.
DIY Fringe Statement Earrings β Persia Lou. A floss half circle worked in rows, a small circle glued on top, and a full floss fringe below, on a 3mm hook. The pattern gives two sizes. They look like boutique earrings but use only single crochet.
Flower and leaf earrings
Pretty, feminine designs that suit spring weddings and fall outfits alike.
Lovely Leaves Crochet Earrings β Fiber Flux. Each leaf is just one round of hdc, sc and dc worked into a ring, and several leaves are clustered on jump rings for a dangly fall earring about 2 1/2 inches long. Floss on an F/3.75mm hook, beginner-friendly, with a video.
Forget Me Not Earrings β Rich Textures Crochet. Tiny five-petal flowers about 1 inch across, starting with 10 sc in a magic ring, in two colors of cotton embroidery thread on a 2.5mm hook. Rated easy, with a video.
Irish Rose Flower Earrings β Banana Moon Studio. Layered petals worked in size 10 thread on a 1.65mm steel hook, starting from 12 sc in a ring, for a flower about 1 3/4 inches across. Rated intermediate, and a beautiful heirloom-style gift.

Floral Hoop Earrings β EyeLoveKnots. A two-round flower (12 dc, then 24 dc) laced inside a 40mm hoop, in #10 thread on a 2.35mm hook. They finish 2 1/4 inches wide, and the designer says each earring takes about seven minutes.

Tips for neat crochet earrings
- Make both earrings in one sitting. Your tension changes from day to day, so making the pair together keeps them the same size.
- Weave ends in well, then trim. Earrings move a lot. Weave each tail back through several stitches, and a tiny dab of clear glue or fabric glue on the end keeps it from working loose.
- Stiffen lacy designs. A light coat of fabric stiffener, Mod Podge or diluted white glue keeps mandalas and flowers flat. Pin them to a foam board to dry.
- Open jump rings sideways. Twist the ends apart with pliers rather than pulling them open, so they close back tightly.
- Keep them light. Thread and floss are already light, but skip heavy beads on big designs so they're comfortable to wear all day.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best yarn for crochet earrings?
Cotton embroidery floss (all six strands) and size 10 cotton crochet thread are the most popular. Floss is easier to work with and comes in hundreds of colors. Thread gives a finer, lacier look. A few patterns, like the gift box earrings, use worsted cotton for a chunkier style.
What size crochet hook do I need for earrings?
Most thread earrings use a steel hook from 1.4 to 2mm. Floss earrings usually use a 2 to 3.5mm hook. Always check the pattern, since a smaller hook gives a stiffer, neater earring.
How do I make crochet earrings stiff?
Use a fabric stiffener, Mod Podge or a mix of white glue and water. Soak or brush the earring, shape it, pin it flat on a foam board and let it dry completely before you add the ear wires.
Are crochet earrings heavy?
No. Crochet earrings are among the lightest earrings you can wear, because thread and floss weigh almost nothing. Even large statement earrings are usually lighter than metal ones of the same size.
