22 Free Crochet Wine Bottle Cover Patterns (Cozies, Gift Bags and Holiday Toppers)

Looking for a free crochet wine bottle cover pattern? Here are 22 of them: Santa, snowman and Christmas tree cozies, a Santa apron, Santa hat and gnome toppers, drawstring gift bags and totes with handles, and textured everyday cozies you can give all year. Every pattern is free in full on the designer's own site, with written rounds and no sign-up. A bottle of wine in a handmade cover is one of the easiest hostess gifts there is. Most of these take one evening and less than a skein of yarn.

For each pattern I've noted the yarn, hook, size where the designer gives it, and how it starts. Almost all of them begin the same way: a flat circle for the base (a magic ring with 6 to 12 stitches), increased until it fits the bottom of the bottle, then worked straight up. A standard 750ml wine bottle is about 3 inches across and 11 to 12 inches tall, so if your base measures 3 inches, you're on track.

Christmas and holiday wine bottle covers

Perfect for holiday parties, office gift swaps and the neighbors.

Christmas Wine Bottle Holder โ€” Jo to the World Creations. A Santa-suit cover with a fluffy white top and a little belt buckle, in worsted yarn on a 5mm (H/8) hook, plus Bernat Pipsqueak for the fur. It starts with 10 hdc in a magic ring, and the body is in star stitch. It's rated easy and fits a standard 750ml bottle.

Christmas Tree Wine Bottle Holder โ€” Nicki's Homemade Crafts. A cover with a fair isle Christmas tree worked in waistcoat stitch, in worsted acrylic on a 4mm hook. It starts with 6 sc in a magic ring, and there's a built-in handle at the top. There's a video, and the designer pitches it as a hostess gift.

Wine Bottle Santa Apron โ€” Nicki's Homemade Crafts. Not a full cover but a cute Santa apron that ties around the bottle, 6.5 x 9.5 inches, in Lily Sugar'n Cream cotton on a 5mm hook. It starts with ch 21 and rows of sc, with a felt belt buckle. It's beginner level and very quick.

Snowman Wine Cozy โ€” Crochet 365 Knit Too. A snowman with a button face and a scarf tie, in Vanna's Choice held double on a 6mm (J/10) hook. It starts with 11 dc in a magic ring. The designer calls it very easy and a one-evening make, and it has handle loops at the top.

Holiday Bottle Cover โ€” The Crochet Village. An easy cover with a one-row cluster repeat, in worsted (Big Twist Value) on a 4.5mm hook. It starts with 6 hdc in a magic circle, and a tie is threaded through near the top. The designer asks that you view it on the blog rather than copy or print it.

Christmas Wine Bottle Sleeve โ€” MadameStitch. A mesh sleeve with a fur trim and a tie, about 3 inches across the base and 12 inches tall, in about 1.5 oz of worsted on a 5mm (H/8) hook. It starts with 6 sc in the second chain from the hook. It's a good one for beginners.

Christmas Wine Cozy โ€” Hookfully. A cream-and-red cover with a pom-pom string, in DK yarn on a 4mm hook. It starts with 10 hdc in a magic ring. Two pieces are joined at Round 11, so the top opens like a little collar. It's rated easy, and it looks wintery rather than strictly Christmassy.

Wine Bottle Cozy โ€” Sigoni Macaroni. A sturdy cozy in waistcoat stitch, shown in green and berry, about 3 inches across and 10.5 inches tall, in Bernat Super Value on a 6mm hook. It starts with 6 sc in the second chain from the hook. There's a video, and the designer explains how to resize it.

Wine bottle hats and toppers

Toppers cover just the neck of the bottle, so they're the quickest option. Great when you've got a lot of bottles to dress up.

Holiday Wine Bottle Hat and Scarf โ€” The Stitchin' Mommy. A tiny hat and a 13-inch scarf for the neck of the bottle, in about 55 yards of worsted in three colors on a 4mm (G) hook. The hat starts as a flat sc band and the scarf is just 4 sc wide. It's easy, and a fun way to use scraps.

Santa Hat Wine Topper โ€” Sigoni Macaroni. A Santa hat with a pom-pom, in Bernat Super Value on a 5mm hook, sized for a bottle neck about 10 inches around (it's adjustable). It starts with a ch-9 band in hdc rows, then 33 sc around. There's a video. If you love Santa hats, see our full crochet Santa hat patterns.

Gnome Wine Bottle Topper โ€” Nana's Crafty Home. A gnome with a pointed hat, a round nose and a faux fur beard, about 4.5 x 8 inches, in Caron Simply Soft on a 5mm (H/8) hook. The nose starts with 6 sc in a magic circle, and the hat is worked in sc rows. There's a full video. More gnomes are in our crochet gnome patterns.

Wine gift bags and totes

These have handles or drawstrings, so the bottle lifts out easily and the bag can be reused.

Grapey Goodness Wine Bag โ€” Moogly. A wine bag with handles and a drawstring threaded through eyelets, in Red Heart Unforgettable on a 5.5mm (I) hook. It uses one skein. It starts with 6 sc in a magic circle, and the body is in 3-dc clusters. It's intermediate, and fits standard 750ml bottles.

Wine Bottle Gift Bag โ€” Lovable Loops. An open mesh bag about 12 inches tall with two handles built in, in worsted on a 4.5mm hook. It starts with 11 hdc in a magic ring. It's beginner level and fits a 750ml bottle.

Heart Wine Bottle Bag โ€” Lovable Loops. A bag with a heart motif and an sc strap, in worsted (cotton suggested) on a 5mm (H/8) hook. It starts with 9 hdc in a magic ring. Sweet for Valentine's Day, an anniversary or a wedding gift.

Boho Wine Tote โ€” Spotted Horse Design Co. A pretty tote with bobble stitches, open mesh and two beaded drawstrings, in #3 cotton (Yarn Bee Sugarwheel) on a 4.5mm (G) hook. It starts with 10 hdc in a magic circle. It's advanced beginner and fits a 750ml bottle.

Wine Bottle Bag with Bow โ€” The Caffeinated Snail. A simple bag with a handle hole near the top and a separate crochet bow, in worsted on a 4.5mm hook. It starts with 11 dc in a magic ring. It's beginner level.

Wine Bottle Bag โ€” Goddess Crochet. A bag with a band of popcorn stitches that pads the bottle, plus a handle and a drawstring, in worsted on an H hook. It starts with 6 sc in the second chain from the hook. It fits a standard bottle.

Merry Wine Gift Bag โ€” Maggie's Crochet. The fastest bag here: bulky yarn on a 10mm (N/15) hook, starting with 11 dc in a ch-5 ring, then dc rounds until it's tall enough, with a long chain tie. It fits a 750ml or 1.5L bottle. There are right- and left-handed videos, and it's rated easy.

Everyday and textured wine cozies

These aren't seasonal, so they work for birthdays, housewarmings and thank-yous all year.

Star Stitch Wine Bottle Holder โ€” Jo to the World Creations. A thick, textured cozy in star stitch, 3.5 inches across and 7 inches high, in about 143 yards of worsted on a 5mm hook. It starts with 10 hdc in a magic ring. It's easy, holds a 750ml bottle, and is the same base as the Santa suit above.

Wine Bottle Cover โ€” Crochet 'n' Create. A two-color cover with front-post texture and a chain tie with pom-poms, in King Cole Cottonsoft DK on a 4mm hook (25g of each color). It starts with 11 tr (UK) or 11 dc (US) into a ch-5 ring, and both UK and US versions are written out on the page. It fits a standard 75cl bottle.

Twisted Textures Wine Cozy โ€” A Crocheted Simplicity. A smart cozy with cables, mini bean stitch and handles, 10 inches around and 9.5 inches tall, in Lion Brand Wool-Ease on a 4mm hook. It starts with 12 dc in the third chain from the hook. A lovely gift for someone who appreciates texture.

Burgundy Shell Stitch Wine Cozy โ€” The Crochet Village. A shell-stitch cozy in worsted cotton on a 4mm (G) hook, starting with 8 hdc in a magic circle. It's rated easy. As with the Holiday Bottle Cover above, the designer asks that you view it on the blog.

Tips for wine bottle covers that fit

  • Measure the base first. Most bottles are about 3 inches across. When the flat circle reaches that size, stop increasing and start working straight up.
  • Check the bottle you'll actually give. Champagne, sparkling wine and some reds are wider than a standard bottle. Try the cover on as you go.
  • Use cotton for gift bags. Cotton has less stretch than acrylic, so handles won't sag under the weight of a full bottle.
  • Add a tag. Tie a little card or one of these crochet gift tags to the drawstring with the giver's name.
  • Make them in batches. Once you've made one, the next takes about half the time. A few in the cupboard means you always have a last-minute hostess gift.

Frequently asked questions

How much yarn do I need for a crochet wine bottle cover?

Usually 80 to 150 yards of worsted yarn, which is less than one skein. Toppers and the Santa apron use much less, around 50 yards. A bulky bag like the Merry Wine Gift Bag works up fast but uses more yardage.

What size is a standard wine bottle for a crochet cover?

A standard 750ml bottle is about 3 inches (7.5cm) across the base, about 9.5 inches around, and 11 to 12 inches tall. Make the base circle 3 inches across and the body will slide on snugly.

What yarn is best for a wine bottle gift bag?

Cotton or a cotton blend is best because it doesn't stretch, so the bag keeps its shape and the handles hold up. Acrylic works well for cozies and toppers, and comes in lots of holiday colors.

Are crochet wine bottle covers good hostess gifts?

Yes. They take an evening, cost a few dollars in yarn, and the bag can be reused. Pair one with a set of crochet coasters for a gift that feels extra special.
