24 Free Crochet Sock Patterns for Cozy Winter Feet

Looking for a free crochet sock pattern? Here are 24 of them, from chunky slipper socks a beginner can finish in an evening to fitted fingering-weight socks that slip into your boots. Every full written pattern is free on the designer's own site, with no sign-up. You'll also find cabled and waffle-textured socks, knee-highs, a pair of toeless yoga socks, and little socks for kids and babies.

For each pattern I've noted the yarn weight, hook size and sizes where the designer gives them, plus how the sock is built. Many designers also sell an ad-free PDF, but the version linked here is free on the page. Where only one size is free, I've said so.

A quick guide to choosing: if you've never made a sock, start with a chunky slipper sock. Thick yarn and a big hook mean fewer stitches, and the shaping is simple: a toe, a tube, a heel worked in rows and seamed. Once you've made one pair, a worsted textured sock is a nice step up. Thin fingering-weight socks take the most time, but they fit in shoes and last for years.

Easy chunky slipper socks for beginners

Warm, quick, and perfect for padding around the house all winter.

Crochet Slipper Socks β€” Treasurie. A beginner pattern in worsted yarn on 4.5mm and 4mm hooks, in sizes S, M and L with a US, UK and EU size chart. It's worked toe-up in half double crochet, with a flat heel worked in rows and seamed, then a front post double crochet rib cuff.

The Warmest Feet Ever Slipper Socks β€” Carroway Crochet. Super bulky Wool-Ease Thick & Quick on a J/5.75mm hook, in women's sizes 5–6, 7–8 and 9–10, with each size written out separately so there's no juggling numbers. Toe-up in double crochet, with the heel worked in rows and seamed. The designer calls it simple enough for beginners.

Slipper Socks β€” Jo to the World. Super bulky yarn on a K/10.5 6.5mm hook, in women's S, M and L (US shoe sizes 4–6, 7–9 and 10–12). The sock is built in three clear sections, toe, heel and leg, and there's a section on adjusting the size for your own feet.

Chunky Crochet Slipper Socks β€” Blue Star Crochet. Super chunky Drops Snow on an 8mm hook, one size fits most, with notes for adjusting. Toe-up with a folded and seamed heel flap, then a ribbed cuff worked sideways. The designer notes you can keep going up to the knee.

Crochet Christmas Slipper Stockings β€” KnitcroAddict. The festive pick: an easy slipper sock with a pointed, stocking-style cuff, in super bulky yarn on an 8mm hook, in women's sizes 5/6 to 11/12. It's toe-up in half double crochet with a seamed heel. Make a pair for everyone to open on Christmas Eve.

Classic fitted socks (toe-up and cuff-down)

These are true socks in fine yarn, made to wear inside shoes and boots.

The Perfect Pair of Crochet Socks β€” B.Hooked Crochet. Fingering yarn on a 4mm hook (3.5mm for the cuff), in women's S, M and L with a foot-measurement chart. Toe-up in waistcoat-style single crochet, with gusset increases, an afterthought heel and a slip-stitch rib cuff. The designer rates it "complex", so save it for your second or third pair.

Autumn Stroll Crochet Socks β€” Rich Textures Crochet. Fingering-weight WeCrochet Stroll on an F/3.75mm hook, in women's 5/6, 7/8 and 9/10. Cuff-down, with a post-stitch rib, a half double crochet mesh leg, and a heel flap with short-row shaping. Intermediate, with a video to follow.

Crochet 101: Top Down Socks β€” Natalie's Oddities. A great teaching pattern. You size it from your own measurements, using about 275 yards of sport yarn on an F/3.75mm hook. It walks you through the cuff, heel flap, heel turn, picked-up gusset and seamed toe, just like a knitted sock. The stitch counts on the page are examples, so measure first.

Crochet Laceweight Socks β€” crochetcakes. The finest socks here, in laceweight nylon-blend yarn on a 2.5mm hook. They're toe-up in single crochet, with a linked double crochet foot and a short-row heel, sized by measurement (the sample is 64 stitches). Written in English and Spanish. Fiddly, but they're thin enough for any shoe.

Bulky Crochet Socks β€” Nea Creates. A clever, unusual build: the heel cup comes first, with a chain bridge, then the foot is worked to the toe and the leg is picked up afterwards. Bulky yarn on a 5–7mm hook (whatever gets gauge, 13 sc by 14 rows to 10cm), one size around US 8.5 with tips to adjust. Intermediate.

Textured, cabled and ankle socks

Fishbone Crochet Ankle Socks β€” Two Brothers Blankets. A herringbone single crochet texture in sock yarn (about 438 yards) on an E/3.5mm hook. Six sizes fit foot circumferences from 6 to 10 inches, and you work the length to measure. Toe-up with an afterthought heel. Intermediate.

Watson Waffle Crochet Socks β€” Lakeside Loops. A squishy waffle texture from front and back post double crochet, in sport yarn on an E/3.5mm hook. Eleven sizes run from baby 6 months to adult L (women's 10–12, men's 9–11), so the whole family can match. Toe-up, with the heel worked last into an opening. A video is included.

Cozy Crochet Slipper Socks with a Cable β€” Leelee Knits. A front post double crochet cable runs down the top of the foot. Worsted tweed yarn (three 50g balls) on a G-6/4mm hook, toe-up with an afterthought heel. It fits a typical adult women's foot, with the length made to measure.

Country Cottage Socks β€” The Turtle Trunk. A ribbed double crochet texture in worsted yarn on an H/5mm hook, in eight sizes from baby 0–4 to men's 12–14. Toe-up, with an hourglass heel worked in rows and seamed, and a cuff in rows. There's a video too.

Crochet Ankle Socks β€” love. life. yarn. Low-cut socks in fingering yarn on an E/3.5mm hook, in ladies' 4–6, 7–9 and 10–12. Toe-up in double crochet rounds, with a heel worked in rows and seamed and a post-stitch rib. The designer notes the web version is the corrected one, so follow the page.

Knee-highs, lace-ups and yoga socks

Easy Knee High Socks β€” Fosbas Designs. Worsted yarn on a 4mm hook, in 11 sizes (US 5–14). Toe-up in double crochet, with a folded and seamed heel and a cluster V-stitch leg. There are sections for adjusting the calf, and for taking it all the way over the knee. Intermediate.

Valerie's Knee-High Socks β€” The Lavender Chair. A lacy V-stitch leg on a half double crochet foot, in worsted yarn on an I/5.5mm hook (J/6mm for a wider foot or calf). Women's 5/6, 7/8 and 9/10, toe-up with an afterthought heel. Pretty peeking out of tall boots.

Knee-High Boot Socks β€” Ball Hank n' Skein. Heavy worsted to bulky yarn (about 5 oz) on a J hook, one size fits most women. Toe-up, with an afterthought heel and a textured cuff to fold over the boot. It's an older pattern, and readers in the comments mention the heel takes some care, so read through first.

Crochet Lace-Up Socks β€” Maya Luna CorazΓ³n. Something different: a heel-less toe-up tube in half double crochet, topped with a lace panel worked flat and laced up the front. Sport-weight yarn on 3.75mm and 4mm hooks, in EU sizes 35–37, 38–40 and 41–43, long or short. Advanced beginner.

Crochet Yoga Socks β€” Off the Hook for You. Toeless, heelless socks for yoga, Pilates or barre, in DK yarn on a 4mm hook. They start with a foundation half double crochet round. Written for a small women's size (UK 4–6), with notes on sizing up using a heavier yarn and bigger hook. The site is British, but the pattern uses US terms.

Socks for kids and babies

Small feet mean small projects, and they make lovely gifts.

Easy Crochet Kids' Socks β€” Zamiguz. DK or light worsted yarn on an E/3.5mm hook, in six sizes from 0–3 months to 5–8 years. Toe-up in single crochet, with a seamed hourglass heel and a post-stitch cuff. Intermediate.

Flynn Fox Crochet Socks β€” Lakeside Loops. Striped socks with a fox face on the cuff, in DK yarn on an E/3.5mm hook. Eleven sizes go from baby 6 months up to adult L, so a parent and child can match. The heel is worked in post-stitch rounds.

Little Bunny Baby Socks β€” Croby Patterns. Easy baby socks with bunny ears, in sock yarn on a 3mm hook. Toe-up in half double crochet with an hourglass heel and a post-stitch rib leg. The 0–6 month size is free on the page; the 6–12 month size is in the paid PDF.

Baby Girls Socks β€” Crochet 'n' Create. Dainty cuff-down socks with a gathered toe, in sport or 4-ply yarn on a 3.5mm hook, for 0–3 months. Intermediate. The page gives both UK and US terms, so pick the version you know.

Tips for crocheting socks that fit

  • Measure the foot, not the shoe size. Measure around the widest part of the foot and from heel to toe. Crochet has less stretch than knitting, so most designers make the sock about 10 percent smaller than the foot for a snug fit.
  • Try it on as you go. Toe-up socks are easy to fit: try the toe and foot on before you start the heel.
  • Choose the right yarn. Superwash wool with some nylon is the classic for fitted socks because it's warm and hard-wearing. Acrylic is fine for house socks, but it's less breathable.
  • Make them non-slip. For slipper socks worn on wooden floors, add dots of non-slip fabric paint to the soles.
  • Make both socks at once. Work the toe of sock two right after sock one, or count rows carefully, so the pair matches.

Frequently asked questions

Can you crochet socks, or only knit them?

You can absolutely crochet socks. Crochet socks are a little thicker than knitted ones, which makes them extra warm. Fine yarn and a small hook (2.5mm to 3.75mm) give a thin sock that fits in shoes; worsted or bulky yarn gives a cozy house sock.

What is the easiest crochet sock for a beginner?

A chunky slipper sock. The Carroway Crochet, Treasurie and Jo to the World patterns use thick yarn, simple stitches and a heel worked in rows, so you finish fast. After that, try the Natalie's Oddities top-down sock, which teaches every part of a classic sock.

How much yarn do I need to crochet a pair of socks?

Adult fingering-weight socks usually take about 400 to 450 yards. Worsted socks take roughly 200 to 300 yards, and super bulky slipper socks often take one or two skeins. Baby socks need only a small ball or leftovers.

Toe-up or cuff-down: which is better?

Toe-up is easier to fit because you can try the sock on as you go, and you can stop the leg when the yarn runs out. Cuff-down follows a classic heel flap and gusset, which many people find fits a high instep better. Most patterns in this list are toe-up.

More cozy winter crochet

Socks go perfectly with the rest of a winter set. Pair them with crochet slippers, boot cuffs for your tall boots, crochet leg warmers, or warm crochet mittens and fingerless gloves. Top it off with a winter beanie or an ear warmer. Baby socks and ankle socks make lovely cheap stocking stuffers, and a pair of slipper socks is a classic weekend gift.
